2026 tax year · filed in 2027

Your W-2 has two boxes. That's all we need.

Box 1 and Box 2 — your wages and the federal tax withheld during the year. Enter those two and see whether April brings a refund or a bill. No sign-up, no documents to upload, no charge.

Not state tax — federal only. The figure printed in Box 2.

From 2026 part of your tip income is deductible. Your employer works out the qualifying amount and prints it in Box 12 of your W-2 under code TP.

Not the whole of your overtime pay — only the portion the law makes deductible. Your employer does that calculation and prints it in the box; enter the figure from there.

What could move this number

The estimate above assumes someone living on wages and taking the standard deduction. If any of the following is true for you, the real figure will differ — sometimes by a few hundred dollars, sometimes by a great deal more.

Itemizing. If mortgage interest, high state taxes or large charitable gifts add up to more than the standard deduction, you pay less than this shows.
Education credits. Tuition paid during the year can bring in the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning credit. The first is partly refundable.
Earned Income Tax Credit. Below certain income levels this credit can increase a refund substantially, and this tool does not calculate it.
Retirement contributions. Traditional IRA or 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income.
Your state return. Texas has no income tax, but California, New York and most other states have a separate return and a separate calculation.
1099 income. Freelance work, rideshare driving, consulting — these bring in self-employment tax and change the picture from the start.
Marketplace health insurance. Any advance premium credit you received during the year is reconciled on the return.
Working in more than one state. If you moved or worked across state lines, more than one return may be required.
This is a preliminary estimate, not a tax return, and it does not replace advice on your own situation. It uses the published federal figures for the 2026 tax year. It does not calculate state tax, itemized deductions, or any of the situations listed above. A reliable number comes from looking at your documents.
Or have us do it

A licensed CPA prepares it. You review it and sign.

Your return is prepared by a Texas-licensed CPA and we go through it together before anything is filed. The fee is written and fixed before work starts, and nothing is added afterwards.

Want a CPA to look at this?

Send us the estimate above and a CPA will read it. You will have a written reply within one business day: whether the number holds, what you may be missing, and what it would cost.

The figures you entered are included in the message. Do not send your Social Security Number, documents or photographs — if we need them, we will give you a secure way to send them.

Who this tool is not for

Plainly: if one of the following describes you, the number above will not tell you much. It is still worth a conversation — this is the work we do most.

You are not a U.S. tax resident. Form 1040-NR follows different rules and the standard deduction is usually unavailable.
You own a foreign-owned LLC. Form 5472 with a pro forma 1120 carries a $25,000 annual penalty, and it is due even in a year with no activity.
You hold accounts or assets abroad. FBAR and FATCA are separate obligations — they apply even when no tax is owed.
You own an S-Corp or C-Corp. The company files its own return, and the salary-versus-distribution balance changes everything.
You have rental income. Depreciation and the passive activity rules move the result substantially.
You sold shares or crypto. Capital gains are taxed at different rates and the holding period decides which.
